The Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa partnered with the Iowa Dept. of Transportation as a Gold Sponsor for the Mississippi Valley AASHTO conference held July 7th-9th in downtown Des Moines. Nearly 400 transportation officials across ten states attended the three day event. The theme for the conference was "Transportation Transformation". The APAI staff attended the workshop along with NAPA Vice President, Michael Kvach. The event included an exhibition hall where the APAI booth was located and a Technology Expo held in Hy-Vee Hall the last day of the event. APAI brought in Dr. Chris Williams and former IDOT Senior Bituminous Technician, John Hinrichsen to help present the advances in HMA technology including the use of recycled asphalt shingles, warm-mix asphalt, high-RAP mixes and the new "Bio-Binder" being developed at Iowa State University. The asphalt car was in the technology expo display and was a big hit amongst the attendees. The APAI staff would like to thank the following for their assistance during this event: Mike Kvach (NAPA), Dr. Chris Williams (ISU), John Hinrichsen (Iowa DOT - retired), Steve Moyna (Grimes Asphalt & Paving Corp) and all of our friends of the Iowa Department of Transportation who made our attendance possible.
