APAI SMOOTHNESS AWARDS

Entries are due at the APAI office by Monday, October 2, 2017

DESCRIPTION:

The APAI Smoothness Awards recognize the strongest trait of asphalt pavements - Smoothness.  These projects are judged solely on the ride quality of the finished pavement.

CATEGORIES:

  1. Airport Runway/Taxiway Smoothness Award - New construction
  2. Airport Runway/Taxiway Smoothness Award - Rehabilitation
  3. Airport Runway/Taxiway Smoothness Award - Resurfacing
  4. Municipal Street Smoothness Award - New construction
  5. Municipal Street Smoothness Award - Rehabilitation
  6. Municipal Street Smoothness Award - Resurfacing
  7. Secondary Highway Smoothness Award - New construction
  8. Secondary Highway Smoothness Award - Rehabilitation
  9. Secondary Highway Smoothness Award - Resurfacing

GENERAL RULES:

Smoothness award entries are eligible to be submitted by IDOT, County, City and Consulting Engineers, as well as, APAI contractors for projects listed above.  One submission per category, per entity.  Projects are to be completed by Oct. 15, 2017 to be eligible for judging.  Prior work from 2016 is eligible, if completed after Oct. 15, 2016.  All work is to be submitted by Oct. 2, 2017 for judging. Submit the application along with submission of completed project IRI (International Roughness Index) profilometer report.

DEFINITIONS:

The following definitions apply for all the categories above:

New construction:  Project is full-depth asphalt on new grade or is total reconstruction of an existing roadway or runway using full-depth asphalt on new grade.

Rehabilitation:  Project is constructed using one of the following rehabilitation techniques:  Rubblization, Modified Rubblization, Break and Seat, Crack and Seat, Full Depth Reclamation, or Cold-in-place Recycling.

Resurfacing:  Project is constructed utilizing an asphalt overlay, mill and overlay, or asphalt interlayer.

PROJECT MINIMUMS:

Airport Runway/Taxiway Smoothness require a minimum of 1000' of continuous paving.

Municipal Street Smoothness Projects require a minimum of 1200' of continuous paving.

Secondary Highway Smoothness Projects require a minimum of 5280' of continuous paving.

AWARD TESTING:

The projects will be evaluated and narrowed to the top three projects in each category using the final project IRI (International Roughness Index) profilometer report submitted by the applicant.  The IDOT Office of materials, Project Development Division, will perform smoothness testing for the final three projects in each smoothness award category.  The smoothness award winner in each category will be selected based on the lowest average roughness reading for the project as measured by the IRI obtained with a high speed inertial profiler.

Submissions that do not receive the top prize in the Smoothness categories will be considered for Honorable Mention and Quality in Construction Certificates.
