2009 Annual Convention
The weather may have turned cold, but the atmosphere in the West Des Moines Marriott on December 2 & 3, 2009 was anything but. The 54th APAI Annual Convention was well attended and the feelings were running hot as members enjoyed the speakers and entertainment that was available. Not only were the members diligent in attending the meetings, but they were able to renew old friendships and make new friends along the way.

WMA Demo - Warren County
The third WMA demonstration project held yesterday in Des Moines and on highway 69 in Warren Co. was hugely successful with over 50 IDOT personnel, County Engineers, Consulting Engineers, Asphalt Suppliers and Contractors attending the event. This was the third and final WMA demonstration event held across the state in joint partnership between the IDOT, APAI and APAI contractors.
The event began with a welcoming speech by Greg Kinser, of Des Moines Asphalt (OMG) at the Holiday Inn in DM followed by presentations by Bill Rosener of the APAI, Richard Draheim of Astec and asphalt consultant John Bellizzi. The group then boarded a bus to the Des Moines Asphalt Beaver Ave plant to watch the WMA being made at the state-of-the-art facility using the Astec Double Barrel Green process in “foaming” the asphalt cement. The temperature of the WMA was approximately 50 degrees cooler than the traditional HMA being produced at the plant. View full story here.

RAS Demo - Clinton County
Determann Asphalt showed their operational skills during a recycled asphalt shingle (RAS) demonstration on Friday, Oct 2 on Highway 61 north of DeWitt. The demonstration was part of an IDOT and APAI demonstration and testing project to show off the use of tear-off recycled shingles for use in hot-mix asphalt. Determann Asphalt produced a ¾” shoulder mix utilizing 5% RAS and 5% RAP in a 50/50 blend. The use of RAS and RAP decreased the amount of required virgin asphalt cement from 6.3 % to 4.8%. Attendees witnessed the incorporation at the asphalt plant and placement on the shoulders of Highway 61, where over 23,000 tons of RAS/RAP shoulder surface mix is scheduled to be placed. Results from this test project will be used in the Developmental Specifications for the new IDOT RAM (recycled asphalt materials) Specification expected in December of 2009. View full story here.

WMA Demo - Cherokee County
Despite being delayed by a day due to rain, the Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) hosted by Tri-State Paving, Inc. (a division of Oldcastle Materials), the IDOT and the APAI was a well received event. The open house began with presentations by Larry Mattusch of APAI and Kent Dahl of Tri-State Paving describing the benefits of WMA and welcoming the almost 30 attendees who came to learn about WMA.
The group boarded buses to visit the plant site near Ashton to watch the WMA being produced at approximately 230 degrees. The trip to the job site on Hwy 143 outside of Marcus allowed attendees to see the WMA being placed and the easier compaction that WMA provides for the contractor. This was a great day to watch a wonderful product being placed. Thanks go out to all of those involved in making this day such a success. View full story here.

Over thirty members of the IDOT, City and County officials, and contractors attended the plant production and asphalt paving demonstration outside of Charles City. A brief overview of the numerous benefits of WMA including: fuel savings, easier compaction, increased RAP usage and better worker conditions, was followed by more technical information on the Revix and Evotherm 3G additives to produce the WMA by Erv Dukatz of Mathy Construction. Attendees were able to observe the changes at the plant as the production temperature went from 290 degrees to 220-230 degrees. The group traveled out to the job site to watch the placement of the WMA by Mathy’s crew.
