Environmental Sustainability Award:
This award will be presented to a project that demonstrates the sustainability benefits of asphalt pavements. Sustainable pavements meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability to meet future needs. Sustainable pavements provide a balance between thtree primary areas: economic, environmental, and social impacts. Following are some of the individual components for each of these areas:
Environmental: energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, noise, air quality, storm water management
Social: safety, smoothness, vehicle operating costs, access, mobility, aesthetics
Economic: construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation costs, life cycle cost analysis
Several examples of sustainable asphalt pavements are: warm mix asphalt, the use of RAP and RAS in pavements, reuse of existing PCC pavements through crack and seat or rubblization, perpetual pavements, and porous pavements.
Municipal Paving Program Award (Cities < 10,000 pop.) - This award will be presented to a municipality for a yearly asphalt paving program that demonstrates a measurable benefit to the community through sound economic and environmental principles. Program will be judged on work completed through Oct. 15, 2015. The total program must be greater than 5000 tons, include multiple streets and demonstrate the benefits of using asphalt (i.e. speed of construction, smoothness, 100% recyclability, ease of rehabilitation). Feedback from the city engineer, city councilmen and the community will be weighted into the judging.
Metropolitan Paving Program Award (Cities > 10,000 pop.) - This award will be presented to a municipality for a yearly asphalt paving program that demonstrates a measurable benefit to the community through sound economic and environmental principles.
