2018 Greater Iowa Asphalt Conference and Equipment Expo Blows Up!

The Greater Iowa Asphalt Conference and Equipment Expo (GIAC) held February 28th – March 2nd at the Des Moines Airport Holiday Inn Conference Center exploded in 2018 with nearly 100 more attendees, a sold-out exhibition space and a tremendous collection of speakers. “I am amazed by the continued growth of this event,” said Bill Rosener, Executive Vice President of the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa (APAI). “Last year we grew by over a 100 attendees and I thought we had topped out, but it happened again this year. It’s a testament to the value that agencies and contractors are finding for their people: learning the newest innovations in safety and asphalt paving, developing life-long connections, and preparing them for the upcoming construction season.”

The conference theme this year was “Iowa Asphalt Driving Quality”. This theme was reiterated by Rosener during his opening address where he discussed the importance of the partnership between contractors and agencies in building quality projects. “We all have the same goal – we all want a beautiful, smooth, quality project done on time and on budget. The partnerships that exist between the APAI contractors and our local and state agencies are what makes Iowa’s industry the best in the nation,” he said. Iowa Hawkeye great, Chuck Long, presented the Keynote speech on his 16 keys to leadership and received a tremendous ovation upon the completion of his presentation. Other highlights from the event included a funny and poignant presentation by John Ball, President of Top Quality Paving, on the “Do’s and Don’ts of Quality Paving”, “How to Attract and Retain Employees & Dealing with Millennials – Ashley Pedersen of Aerotek, the 2017 Quality Paving Awards with a presentation by Mitch Dillavou of the Iowa DOT and the “Greatest Projects in Iowa” segment by multiple contractors and engineers on Friday Morning. The famous GIAC breakout sessions on Thursday afternoon included: Proper Project Design, Pavement Rehabilitation, Leadership Series: Parts I and II, Innovations in Technology, Proper Project Construction and Pavement Preservation.

The GIAC Equipment Expo featured a sold-out Exhibition Hall with the newest innovations in paving, quality control and safety equipment. The exhibitors were excited about both the attendance and the enthusiasm of the attendees to learning what they had to offer. Several of the exhibitors commented that this event is a “must-attend” and “one of the best shows of the year”.
