APAI QUALITY CONSTRUCTION AWARD

DESCRIPTION

The APAI Quality Construction Awards recognize projects and programs that exemplify quality design and workmanship in construction of asphalt projects in commercial and local agency applications.

AWARD APPLICATION CATEGORIES:

  1. Small Parking Lot Award (<500 tons)
  2. Large Parking Lot Award (>500 tons)
  3. Heavy Industrial Parking Lot Award (Majority Truck Traffic)
  4. Athletic Use - Recreational Trail Award
  5. Athletic Use - Tennis Court - New Construction Award
  6. Athletic Use - Tennis Court - Rehabilitation Award
  7. Athletic Use - Pickelball Court Award
  8. Athletic Use - Running Track Award
  9. Special or Unique Construction Award

GENERAL RULES:

Quality Construction Award entries are eligible to be submitted by County, City and Consulting Engineers and APAI Contractors for projects listed above.  One submission per category, per entity.  Projects are to have been completed by Oct. 11, 2024 to be eligible for judging.  Prior work from 2023 is eligible, if completed after Oct. 15, 2023  All work is to be submitted by September 27, 2024 for judging.

One person per company is required to have their name submitted to be a judge for the Quality Construction Award entries.  The submitter may use the same name on all categories submitted.  Judging will need to be completed and returned to APAI office by October 19, 2023.

PROJECT MINIMUMS:

Small Parking Lot Award - Any project less than 500 tons is eligible

Large Parking Lot Award - Any project greater than 500 tons is eligible

Heavy Industrial Parking Lot Award - Project designed for a majority of heavy truck traffic

Athletic Use - Recreation Trail Project - Minimum of 5280' continuous paving

AWARD CRITERIA:

Quality construction criteria (longitudinal joints, handwork, edges, difficulty) will be rated by a panel of APAI members, consultants, Iowa DOT personnel, and APAI staff using a standardized rating form.  The award winning projects will be selected based on the highest average rating.  Applicants are encouraged to describe challenges associated with the project in their submittals.

Athletic Use - Tennis Courts or Running Tracks are encouraged, but not required, to submit photos of the pavement surface during construction, prior to the final playing / running surfaces are installed.

Special or Unique Use Award - Applicants are encouraged to submit unique, special or unusual uses of asphalt on a project.  Projects in the past have included:  roundabouts, elevated SUV display, interior of buildings, etc.

Projects that do not win the specific category are eligible for honorable mention status and a Quality Construction Award Certificate.
