Asphalt Interlayer/I-35 Open House - Another Success Story
A total of 45 people attended an Asphalt Interlayer open house on August 6, 2012 on I-35 in Cerro Gordo County. Representatives from Heartland Asphalt, Inc., Iowa DOT, City, County, Iowa State University and suppliers were treated to an interesting and innovative process developed to help prevent and delay reflective cracking.
The project consisted of milling 3-4” of existing HMA, placing a 1” flexible interlayer on the north bound passing lane (just north of mile marker 195) and then placing 3” of HMA. The adjoining lane will be milled and surfaced with 4” of HMA as a control section. As reported by Scott Schram, IDOT
Bituminous Engineer, “The flexible interlayer portion added about 5% to the cost which I felt was well worth it to help delay reflective cracking.”
Heartland Asphalt President George Jessen, did an excellent job of explaining the process and fielding questions from the group.
Attendees were also taken to a Cerro Gordo County project to view a 7” PCC pavement (B-20) being crushed on site, and replaced to provide a base for the addition of 8” of HMA.
A special thank you should be given to the following people for their help in making this a very successful and interesting open house - George Jessen, Dave Ricken and Rich Millard, Heartland Asphalt; Scott Schram, IDOT; Chris Williams, ISU; and Mary Kelly, Cerro Gordo County Engineer.
