The 2024 APAI Paving Awards program recognizes projects of exemplary quality. On Interstate and Primary projects, several quality items will be addressed to determine which project is the best. Awards will be presented at the 2024 APAI Convention. Contractor members or Iowa DOT Districts may submit an application for this award.

4. Quality Index Daily Factor: (40%)

Percent Incentive awarded will be used to calculate your total points for this category. You must submit your ASPHALT PRODUCTION INCENTIVE / DISINCENTIVE SUMMARY REPORT . Attach this report as PDFs. *required

Uniformity
The 3 person award team will subjectively review your control charts and daily plant reports to determine how uniform the mix is, and how well controlled the project appeared to be. Job Mix Formula (JMF) changes will be taken into consideration. You must submit your quality control charts for the surface course only for this review. The charts needed are gradation (#4, #8, #30, and #200 sieves and AC content.) It is your responsibility to prepare the control charts so that they are legible. Your score in this category will be tabulated as follows:

Rating of Gradation: 0 – 5 points

Rating of AC Content: 0 – 5 points

5. Workmanship and Complexity: (25%)

All projects submitted for this quality award program will be judged on the above criteria (smoothness, QI, and uniformity). A rating form will be used to judge workmanship and complexity. Your score in this category will be tabulated as follows:

Rating of Workmanship: 0 to 13 points

Rating of Complexity: 0 to 12 points

To assist the rating team, please answer the following questions. This is your opportunity to discuss issues that arose during construction that the team would find useful.

Workmanship: Explain any sections that do not appear uniform, are there any research components of this project that cause a unique appearance, were there any aggregate / asphalt binder issues?  
Complexity: straight, mainline paving will achieve a low score in this category. What was unique about the construction of your project, what obstacles needed to be overcome? Nighttime paving? Special traffic control requirements? Special longitudinal joints? Construction techniques?  

6. Final Score            Possible Points = 100

All information will be tabulated to come up with a total score. The contractor with the highest score will be the award winner.
