MODIFIED RUBBLIZATION/ROCK INTERLAYER OPEN HOUSE HELD IN WARREN COUNTY
A Modified Rubblization with a Rock Interlayer Open House was held on September 1st, 2015 in Warren County with cities, counties, IDOT, contractors, suppliers and consultants. with cities, counties, IDOT, contractors, suppliers and consultants all represented. This 5 1/2 mile project is County Rte. G76 from IA Hwy 65 west to IA Hwy 69.
This Project utilized modified rubblization, which consists of fracturing the old PCC roadway into 12"-18" pieces utilizing a multi-head breaker. Once the rubblization is complete, a 1.5" class "A" rock interlayer is placed through the paver and static rolled. Four inches of warm mix asphalt was then placed over the rock base in two lifts. The rock interlayer provides two benefits: first, it creates a construction platform for the overlay by giving structure to the modified rubblization and second, it creates a stress relief layer between the old PCC roadway and the new asphalt overlay. This rock interlayer will help retard reflective cracking over the life of the pavement.
The west bound lane had been completed so it gave the attendees the chance to see all phases of the construction. Brad Henningsen, President of Henningsen Construction of Atlantic, IA and David Carroll, Warren Co. Engineer, did an excellent job of explaining the process and fielding questions from the group. David pointed out that he was extremely happy with the project to date and that he was not overly concerned with the few sub-grade failures that had been encountered. This project is expected to be completed in the next two weeks.
A special Thank You to the employees of Henningsen Construction and Warren County for hosting this interesting and successful Open House.
