The Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa (APAI) represents the finest collection of contractors, suppliers, associates and consulting engineers engaged in the design, production and construction of Iowa’s high quality asphalt pavements. APAI promotes the use of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) through publications, conferences, on-site visits and technical training events. 1. Leadership
The members of the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa form a strong coalition in promoting the use of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). APAI is the voice for the asphalt industry in Iowa on specifications, production and quality control of HMA pavements on the state, county, and city level as well as informing the traveling public.
2. Asphalt Industry Liaison
APAI meets with the Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT), Iowa County Engineers, the American Public Works Association (APWA) members, and consulting engineers to represent the asphalt industry and present new methods, specifications, and technologies to these entities and further promote the use of quality HMA.
3. Technology and Innovation
APAI acts as a clearing house for the latest national / international technologies and innovations in the asphalt industry. The APAI staff present these advancements in seminars, conferences, and “black bag” lunches throughout the year.
4. Education
The APAI staff and members are committed to educating design engineers and the traveling public about the advantages of Hot Mix Asphalt including: safety, speed of construction, smoothness, quiet ride, sustainability, and the strong environmental benefits.
5. Reference Library
Located at the APAI office is an extensive library of asphalt publications, videos, power point presentations, and reference materials from the APAI, National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA), the Asphalt Institute, National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT), the Asphalt Paving Alliance, the IDOT, and the Federal Highway Administration. The reference library is available for use by APAI members and many of the publications are free of charge.
6. APAI Design Guide
This state-of-the-art design guide was released in 2005 as a tool for city, county and consulting engineers to use in designing and constructing quality asphalt pavements. View a copy of the guide online.
7. Technical Assistance
The experienced field engineers of APAI provide technical assistance to engineers and governing bodies on how to properly design, construct, or rehabilitate HMA pavements.
8. Greater Iowa Asphalt Conference
This event held the first week of March each year in partnership with Iowa State University boasts over 650 attendees and exhibitors. The conference is broken up into distinct tracks that focus upon, HMA technical / specification updates, County / City HMA pavement solutions, proper HMA construction techniques, HMA pavement design, HMA plant operations and safety. Conference attendees range from city, county, and consulting engineers, QMA technicians, estimators, project managers, foremen, and superintendents of HMA producers. (More on GIAC)
9. Publications
APAI produces the Iowa Asphalt Report that is issued to over 2400 decision makers throughout the industry (click to see copy). These decision makers include state, county, city, consulting officials, and engineers. The IAR provides information and instruction regarding new technologies and construction practices.
The APAI FastLane is a monthly newsletter keeping our members up-to-date on the latest happenings, both legislatively and industry-wide.
10. Annual Convention, Events and Committees
Employees of APAI member companies can develop leadership / team-building skills through committee participation, as well as keeping abreast of new information and techniques in the asphalt industry. APAI also holds several membership events each year including golf outings, a beach party / BBQ, and our Annual Convention in December.
