DESCRIPTION
The APAI Quality Design Awards recognize projects and programs that exemplify quality design, environmental stewardship, and achievements in the advancement of asphalt paving.

GENERAL RULES
Quality Design Award entries are eligible to be submitted by County, City and Consulting Engineers and APAI contractors for categories listed above. One submission per category, per entity. Projects are to have been completed by Oct. 15, 2021 to be eligible for judging. Prior work from 2021 is eligible, if completed after Oct. 15, 2021. All work is to be submitted by September 30, 2022 for judging.
PROJECT MINIMUMS:
Municipal Paving Program Award (Cities < 10,000 pop.) – Minimum 5000 tons
Metropolitan Paving Program Award (Cities > 10,000 pop.) – Minimum 10,000 tons
Iowa Counties Paving Program Award – Minimum 30,000 tons and 2 projects
AWARD CRITERIA:
Quality Design or Program awards will be judged by a panel of APAI members, consultants, SUDAS personnel, and APAI staff. Awards will be selected based on merit, quality construction and judgement of the committee. Applicants are encouraged to describe challenges associated with the project in their submittals.
Projects that do not win the specific category are eligible for honorable mention status and a Quality Design Award Certificate.
Municipal Paving Program Award (Cities < 10,000 pop.) - This award will be presented to a municipality for a yearly asphalt paving program that demonstrates a measurable benefit to the community through sound economic and environmental principles. Program will be judged on work completed through Oct. 15, 2022. The total program must be greater than 5000 tons, include multiple streets and demonstrate the benefits of using asphalt (i.e. speed of construction, smoothness, 100% recyclability, ease of rehabilitation). Feedback from the city engineer, city councilmen and the community will be weighted into the judging.
Metropolitan Paving Program Award (Cities > 10,000 pop.) - This award will be presented to a municipality for a yearly asphalt paving program that demonstrates a measurable benefit to the community through sound economic and environmental principles. Iowa Counties Paving Program Award - This award will be presented to a county for a yearly asphalt paving program that demonstrates a measurable benefit to the citizens of the county through sound economic and environmental principles. Program will be judged on work completed through Oct. 15, 2022. The total program must be greater than 30,000 tons, include a minimum of two projects and demonstrate the benefits of using asphalt (i.e. speed of construction, smoothness, 100% recyclability, ease of rehabilitation). Feedback from the county engineer, county supervisors and the citizens of the county will be weighted into the judging.
